| Te Kauhoe Wano M.Ed (administration) is a freelance broadcaster with experience in both Maori and mainstream media. In 2004 he and wife Pirihira set up Toa TV Ltd when Maori TV was launched. Prior to that, he was a presenter/reporter/director with the award winning Maori language documentary series Waka Huia at TVNZ. He resigned from there in 2003 to freelance and since, has worked as sports journalist for TV3 and TV1 news, reo Maori rugby commentator and news reader for Radio Waatea, writer for Mana magazine and director for Aka Productions DNZ documentary The Brown Factor, winner of the best Sports programme at the 2004 Quantas Media Awards.
Much of his time since has been spent producing and presenting Toa TV shows including Te Hikoi Mahanga, Pakihi Toa and Iwi Allstars. Last year Toa TV produced nga Ahurei o te Raumati, a 6 part series on the Maori presence at summer festivals around Aotearoa and a one hour documentary on Airini Mason, NZ’s best women surfer. It was named as the top sports show at last years Maori Media Awards After producing top rating Maori TV sport show CODE for two years, Toa TV won the right to produce it independently in 2008. Other current productions include Series 3 of Te Hikoi Mahanga and a documentary to be shot in Jamaica and Aotearoa on the impact of reggae on Maori. When not working, he can be found surfing the waves with his 3 sons at Piha where he lives with them and his wife Pirihira. |
Pirihira was the production assistant on Series 1 of Te Hikoi Mahanga and was trained in all aspects of production management including running budgets and commitment diaries, pay schedules and callsheets. She has gone on to successfully take over the production management of Toa TV’s fashion documentary Puwera, Iwi Allstars, Te Hikoi Mahanga 2, Airini Mason and Nga Ahurei o te Raumati. She is currently in pre - production with Toa TV’s Hikoi Mahanga 3 and He Koha mo Bob Marley.
Pirihira is fluent in Te Reo Maori and has a Graduate Diploma in Leadership (Maori Development) with level 7 & 8 credits. She completed and passed Business Leadership & Culture – a Maori Perspective; Accounting for Maori Business; Business Law for Maori Organisations; Marketing and Management Maori Organisations and Entrepreneurship & Innovation for Maori Organisations at UNITEC. She also has 7 papers towards Waikato University’s, Bachelor in Maori Studies and tertiary qualifications in Maori health. She worked as a Mental Health worker before beginning as production assistant for Toa TV in 2004 Pirihira and husband Te Kauhoe live in Piha with their three sons, Tunui, Waretini and Timu. |
